Organization Summary
Vancouver Island Mountain Sport Society (VIMSS) is a community based, volunteer organization
committed to supporting Mountain Sports (alpine and nordic snow-sports and mountain
biking), its athletes and coaches and offering outdoor experiential education to organized and
educational groups as well as to the community at large.
The Vancouver Island Mountain Centre
A major part of the VIMSS operations are based out of the Societies own multi-functional
facility. The VI Mountain Centre (the Centre) has dormitory accommodation for 40 people,
large and small common/meeting rooms, a fitness centre, therapy room, and a large double
appliance self-catering kitchen. The Centre is dependent on its educational programs, facility
rentals and room bookings as a major component of its success.
Summer Student Job Description:
The Centre is seeking to hire a responsible and flexible summer student to oversee guest services and centre day-to-day operations over the summer. This is a great opportunity for a student seeking summer employment while also being able to enjoy some of the great summer outdoor activities available on Mount Washington and in Strathcona Park.
Key Responsibilities
- Customer Service – Front end information service, facility tours, cash handling, answering phone and checking and responding to emails, taking messages, check-ins. Create and manage invoices for programs at VIMC, receiving payments and sending receipts. Organize and file waivers and other paperwork and maintain entries in the database.
- Summer Programs and Camps – Assist in delivery of summer programs and camps as well as maintain tent camping sites.
- The Mountain Fitness Centre – Greeting guests, signing individuals up for memberships, cash handling, fitness centre orientations, minor machine and area cleaning and maintenance.
- Marketing – Assist in managing social media accounts and promoting activities and events through these accounts.
- Cleaning – Basic care and cleaning of building including: program equipment, fitness equipment, appliances, some laundry, vacuuming and general cleaning plus any cleaning needed for COVID-19 Provincial Health requirements.
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Applicants should be comfortable working with the public without supervision and have the ability to multi-task and prioritize while displaying professionalism. This position is funded through the Canada Summer Job program. Applicants should be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident legally entitled to work in BC. Training and experience will be gained in the described areas
Desired Skills and Experience:

Cash handling (credit/debit machine use) as well as management of financial transactions

Coordination skills and experience to arrange arrival and departure of groups

Comfortable using computers, including spreadsheets, word processors and gmail

Organizational skills to ensure proper set up for individuals or groups

Communication skills with groups booking and with supervisors

Good written, social media, marketing, photo skills

Skills in identifying building maintenance issues and day-to-day requirements
This position will be 35 hours a week and include some weekends
Wage: $15.20/hour
